Countertop Ice Maker Size and Capacity Chart: Footprint, Bin Size and Daily Output

Size the machine to peak hour, not to the day — a family of five needs about 8–10 lb a day but 3 lb inside one hour, and that peak is what strands you. Countertop classes run from a 9 lb mini at roughly 8.5 x 11 x 12 inches to a 44 lb unit at 12 x 17 x 17, and every one of them needs 4–6 inches of vent clearance the spec sheet buries. Bin capacity is the least useful number on the box because an unrefrigerated bin melts back into the reservoir.

Buy for peak hour. A household of five gets through eight to ten pounds of ice on a normal day, which a 26 lb machine covers easily on paper — but three of those pounds land in a single twenty-minute window around dinner, and a 26 lb machine makes roughly half a pound in twenty minutes. That gap is why people who did the daily arithmetic correctly still end up standing at an empty bin.

The two tables below fix that. The first converts your actual household into a peak-hour figure and a design target. The second gives you the physical envelope of each machine class — width, depth, height, the vent clearance that never appears on the product image, bin capacity and reservoir volume.

Measure your counter before you read either one. Not the width — the depth, from the wall to the front edge, and the height to the underside of the wall cabinet. Depth and overhead are what kill installs.

    Take the nameplate class from the last column into the machine table below. If your row says the machine can't cover the peak, believe it — buying a bigger countertop unit will not fix a peak-hour problem, only stored ice will.

    Two rules of thumb behind those numbers. Ordinary household drinking use runs about 1.5–2 lb per person per day, and entertaining runs about 3 lb per guest per evening. A standard 12 oz glass filled with cubes holds roughly 0.35–0.4 lb, so 2 lb a day is around five or six glasses.

    Then derate. Every figure in the last column assumes a nameplate rated at a lab ambient no kitchen has. In a real 78–82°F kitchen, subtract about 20% before you commit.

    Add the clearance column to the depth column before you decide it fits. A 12.5-inch-deep machine that wants 5 inches behind it needs 17.5 inches of counter, and that is the measurement that fails.

    The 34.5-inch height on both undercounter rows is not arbitrary — it's the standard American counter height, which is why those machines slide into a 15-inch cabinet bay. If your counter is a custom height, measure it. Retrofits fail on a quarter inch surprisingly often.

    Overhead clearance catches people worse than depth. Countertop machines load through a top lid, and a 12.9-inch-tall unit under a cabinet with 14 inches of clearance leaves you an inch to get your hand in.

  3. Three measurements to take before you commit

    • Counter depth, wall to front edge, in inches. Then subtract the clearance figure from the table. What's left is your maximum machine depth.
    • Underside of the wall cabinet to the counter surface. Subtract machine height. You need at least 8 inches left to open the lid and lift out a bin scoop, and 10 is comfortable.
    • Distance to the nearest outlet, and what else is on that circuit. Countertop ice makers run at 100–150 W but pull a compressor start surge of 300–600 W. On a shared kitchen circuit with a kettle and a toaster, that surge is what trips the breaker.

    Also look at which side the vent is on. Most countertop machines exhaust through one side and the rear, and pushing that side against a wall is the single most common cause of an owner reporting halved output six weeks after purchase. It isn't a fault. It's a blocked condenser.

  4. Reservoir, plumbed, or neither

    Countertop machines under about 40 lb are almost always reservoir-fed. You pour water in, a pump recirculates it, and any ice that melts in the unrefrigerated bin drains straight back into the reservoir to be frozen again. That recycling is a genuine efficiency, and it's also why the water in a portable goes stale fast if you leave it.

    The 44 lb class is the crossover. Several models in it accept a 1/4-inch supply line, and if you have one available, take it — a plumbed unit is the difference between four refills a day and none.

    Undercounter machines are plumbed as standard and, importantly, need a gravity drain. Not a pump, not a bucket: a drain line with continuous fall to a trap. If you cannot give it one, the entire undercounter category is closed to you, and that decision should be made before you look at a single model.

  5. Powering one in an RV, van or boat

    Sizing is the same arithmetic — take your row from the demand table — but the power side is where these installs go wrong. A 26 lb countertop machine draws roughly 100–130 W while running, and that number is harmless. The compressor start surge is the problem: 300–600 W for a fraction of a second, on every cycle start.

    A 1,000 W pure-sine inverter is the practical floor. Modified-sine inverters run these compressors badly and shorten their life, and a 600 W inverter that handles the running load will still shut down on surge. Reckon on 0.15–0.25 kWh per pound of ice in a hot vehicle, which is real battery capacity, not a rounding error.

    Drainage matters too. A portable's bin drain plug is designed to empty into a sink. In a vehicle, either plumb it to a grey tank or accept that you're emptying it by hand — leaving the plug out and letting it run to the floor pan is how people find corrosion later.

  6. Why bin capacity is the least useful number on the box

    A countertop machine's bin is not refrigerated. It's an insulated plastic tub sitting above a drain that returns melt water to the reservoir. So the "2.2 lb bin" on the spec sheet describes how much ice fits, briefly, before it starts turning back into the water it came from.

    In a 75°F kitchen you'll lose a meaningful fraction of a full bin overnight. That isn't a fault and there's no fix inside the machine — the fix is a freezer bag. Run the machine, bag the ice, put the bag in the freezer, repeat. That's how you build a genuine 12 lb buffer out of a 2 lb bin, and it's the answer to almost every home-bar and party row in the demand table.

    Undercounter machines are different. Their bins are insulated and cold-held, so the 25–30 lb figure is closer to real. Even there, expect some overnight loss.

  7. Carry the number forward

    You should leave this page with two figures: a design demand in pounds per day and a peak-hour requirement in pounds. Those two, plus your counter depth and your clearance allowance, resolve the machine class without any brand shopping at all.

    Once the machine is in and running, weigh a full 24 hours of output and divide by nameplate. That ratio tells you whether the unit is performing to spec at your ambient — and it's the number to have in hand if you ever need to argue that a machine is underperforming rather than simply obeying the weather.
